About Fonts

Fonts and their attributes can dramatically enhance - or detract from - the quality of a website.  Websby features a fonts repository that is set up in advance of building the site design out so that fonts used remain consistent throughout the site and managing them is made easy.

Each font can be set up to have a particular font face, size, color, and attributes including bold, italic, small caps, and a customizable shadow effect.  There is a large list of available fonts, both traditional and Google Fonts, and more can be added upon request.

In addition to making the site consistent and easier to manage, the architecture of Websby is such that, if you wanted to change all of the fonts in your site, either to update the look or to match a change in the design, all you need do is change the font attributes for the existing fonts, and the changes you make will be apparent everywhere that particular font is used.

The image below shows what the fonts list looks like when the Font icon is clicked in the Root WebSpace.

To add or configure a font, you can click anywhere on it in the list view.

Add / Edit a Font

Each of the fields / buttons on the Add / Edit fonts form are numbered in the image above and the corresponding explanations below indicate the purpose and use of each field.

The Font name field is used to uniquely identify each font so that you or your users can identify it in forms where they want to use it.  There are a number of approaches that can be used when naming fonts to make it easier for people to select the correct font.  One method is to include the font face, size and color (eg.  "Arial 24 White")  and another is to use the font's purpose as the name (eg. "Site color titles").  Whatever your scheme for naming, give it some thought and be consistent so that your fonts remain organized and manageable.

The Webmaster lock is visible only to Webmasters and is a mechanism to prevent changes being made to certain fonts.  This feature exists to help preserve specific styles within websites that are governed centrally by the district.

Depending on the font, a number of styles can be applied to it. The drop down list contains all possible style modifications and you can apply one or more of these by clicking on the different items in the list. Once assigned, you can delete a style by clicking on the small x beside the item as illustrated below.

Computer fonts (not web based fonts such as Google fonts) can be made to have a drop shadow effect.  These fields allow you to define the nature of the shadow, including x and y offset (how far the shadow extends from the font in the horizontal and vertical plane, the Blur Radius, which determines how 'fuzzy' the shadow is, and the Opacity which determines how dark / visible the shadow effect is.  You can experiment with these settings to achieve a number of interesting effects, but we encourage you to ensure that the fonts you create are legible and clear.
If your font supports a shadow and you have assigned a shadow to the font being edited, you can adjust the color of the shadow to achieve different effects
